Exercise

Students will review different visual resources where artists created optical illusions. You will explain that artists use 3 basic techniques to create these illusions. 1. Equalized positive and negative space-show examples and explain. 2. High contrasting colors-Complementary colors, black and white. 3. Implied vanishing point Students will create a design that includes at least one vanishing point and shows an equal amount of positive and negative space by alternating each space in black and white (like a checkerboard). Once the design is colored in black and white equally, students will pick a complementary color scheme to color in some of the white spaces in the design showing a gradual change in value to increase the illusion of depth. In another area, the white spaces will be colored using the other complementary color.
