Searching for Women in Wikipedia

This learning exercise allows the reader of the assignment "Adding Women's History to Wikipedia" to explore the kinds of discussions and projects in the fast-moving Wikipedia editor environment.

Each Wikipedia article that is part of a larger Wikiproject effort is assessed and given a particular "grade" for quality (see more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Assessment). Look for example at the DISCUSSION page for the entry "Lucy Stone" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Lucy_Stone). Notice also that various Wikiproject editors suggest new components that could be added to the entry. Now, review the long history of revisions to the article (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lucy_Stone&action=history) - including editors' work at reverting the article to a previous version so to remove erroneous information from "vandalism." Now, think about your most important woman role model - be sure to chose someone whose life and/or activities are documented publicly (e.g., newspaper articles, other encyclopedias). Search for her in Wikipedia. Is she there? Why or why not? If her article is on Wikipedia, how did it get there, when, and what is its current status regarding its quality?

Learning Objectives

By the end of this short exercise, the learner will be able to find detailed information on how a Wikipedia article is constructed and begin to make decisions whether or not the entry needs to be improved regarding its coverage of women's history.
