How Does the Punnet Square Predict the Actual Ratio

Predictions are made using Punnett Squares using pennies or chips to simulate crosses made.

Exercise

1. As an introduction, students will determine the phenotypes of representative
alleles and record them on the worksheet.
2. The student will then determine the ratio of offspring of a specific
genotype.
3. Using the results of the test cross, the student will use coins to calculate
the percentage or ratios from the test cross and compare the predicted to the
actual results.
4. Students will answer inquiry based questions related to the worksheet.

Requirements

None

Topics

Phenotype and genotype determinations, probability, ratios, prediction, and inquiry.

Type of Task

Learning Objectives

Provide students with opportunity to practice simulating test crosses to determine genotypes and phenotypes used in Mendelian genetics.
