Each group will read a different scenario, but every member of the group will be
reading the same scenario. The first student writes on a piece of paper
attached to the scenario what their decision is based on the first read. They
write their decision only and pass the paper to the person on their right. That
person must write a paragraph justifying the decision on the paper even though
it may not be what they personally feel. The paper is then passed to the next
student and they write if they agree or dissagree with the position and why.
This gets students to see opposing views and justify their decisions. The
students within the group now discuss their views for the remainder of the class
period. This activity culminates with students writing a position paper using
a graphic organizer to clarify their position and arguments either for or
against. Written assignments are graded using a rubric presented to the
students before they write their final copy of their position paper.
