DISTILLATION SIMULATION

This website can be used in conjunction with the lab I do on how crude oil is refined (fractional distillation). The flash animation shows how crude oil travels through a refinery and how each fraction separates and the boiling points of each fraction. I feel that the animation would be the most helpful after the lab is complete and we are moving into the discussion mode of the lab. The distillation lab I use was adapted from a SEPUP activity.

You need a distillation apparatus to distill some form of simulated crude oil (water, methanol, glycerin). Then take density values, viscosity, boiling points, etc. to identify the fractions.
