Exercise

Students may read each section in sequence and then discuss key questions as a
class and have students journal each step.
1) Conclusion: Students read conclusion (the last two paragraphs) of the
article. Key questions: What is
the hypothesis and significance of the article.
2) Introduction and Prediction: Students read introduction section. Key
question:
What is the hypothesis or research question? Is there any back ground
information? Summarize what you
think will be in the article.
3) Skim the rest of the article to get an overall picture.
4) Methods and Results: Carefully examine the article. Students should
summarize
results. Key questions: What did the researchers find? Have students use a
graphic organizer like a venn diagram to compare the the pros and cons of
fishing. Think of the sport fishermen as pro and researchers as cons. Are there
any
reasons why they may be in agreement?
5) Analysis: Have students give a personal opinion and/or ideas for further
research.
