Taking care of your body

We have been talking about why it is important to take care of your body and how to have a healthy body. The students are also taking food and nutrition classes where they have to prepare healthy foods. This is part of a 3 week thematic unit. It will end with the students giving their presentations and cooking a healthy meal.

DISCIPLINE/TOPIC- Health and nutrition will be covered, specifically how to eat healthy.

TARGET POPULATION: Self contained special education students.

GRADE LEVE- High school grades 9-12

POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS- These learners are special education students who are reading and writing on levels significantly lower than their grade levels. They learn best when working in groups and creating projects.

CURRICULUM LINKS- We have been talking about why it is important to take care of your body and how to have a healthy body. The students are also taking food and nutrition classes where they have to prepare healthy foods. This is part of a 3 week thematic unit. It will end with the students giving their presentations and cooking a healthy meal.

MATERIALS/TIME- For special education students this lesson will take place over 3 days each time lasting about 45 minutes

SCOPE & SEUENCE-
The students will be put into groups of three. Each group member will be given a roll or job. One will be the reporter, one the designer and the other will be the researcher.
The job of the reporter will be to use the information from the website to write a short report on why it is important to be and stay healthy. The Designer will use the information from the website as well as from the reporter to design a poster that lists all the ways a person can stay healthy. They can add pictures or drawings to their poster board. The researcher will be in charge of using information from the site as well as their group members to create a pamphlet of places to go or people to contact to get more information on health and nutrition.
Once the students have worked together to create a written report, a visual representation, and a pamphlet they will present it to the class. Each group member will give themselves a group grade as well as rating each of the other groups. They will also be given a grade from the teacher on their work. Working in groups will help these students greatly since there is an area for each type of learner.

EVALUATION OF STUDENTS- The students will be graded based on this rubric total of 50 points.
