Exercise

1. Enter the website and read the first page.
a. Write down your “think-aloud.” This is metacognition and you will need to
model this for your future students.
b. Prompting thoughts:
i. What part of the passage do you need to use “fix-it” strategies?
ii. What “fix-it” strategies do you use?
iii. What questions does the passage prompt?
iv. What connections do you make?
c. What type of internal text structure is used for this passage? Explain
your choice. (description, sequence, comparison/contrast, cause/effect,
problem/solution)
3. Enter the vocabulary section. Look through the Terms to know about Mitosis
and Meiosis and Terms to know in Mendelian Genetics. Create a graphic organizer
to help visualize 1-2 of the vocabulary terms. You may use any of the
resources at this website.
4. Browse Materials in www.merlot.org. Find a site in your content area that
you may possibly use. Write a brief description about the website and how it
aids content literacy.

Pre-service teachers may need some supervision and guidance to practice content literacy strategies.

Students need to be admitted into the teacher education program.
