The DEMOS project ran from 2000 to March 2003 and was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England under strand three of the initiative 'Improving Provision for Students with Disabilities'. This project can be used as a good model for those who are involved with issues related to students with disabilities in higher education. The project developed an online learning package aimed specifically at academic staff and examined the issues faced by disabled students in higher education. The disabled students are the ultimate beneficiaries of the project. The project is striving to provide a better learning environment for the disabled students. Disabled students spend a good deal of time and effort in the negotiation of barriers within the environment and if we can reduce these we will benefit the student's learning experience. The project is specific to the learning environment, although this term is used in its broadest sense. This project is aimed to increase the competence and confidence of academic staff in understanding the needs of disabled students.
