Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The site provides a set of lecture notes with comprehensive coverage of a standard introductory Differential Equations course and even some of the topics that are not usually covered due to the lack of lecture time. It is part of a full collection of notes for several math classes and contains detailed notes for all of the topics the typical course covers. The lecture notes are easy to read and the choice of examples are standard. Often the material covered is hyperlinked to the Calculus set of lecture notes which is very useful.
Concerns:
Unlike the set of Calculus notes, there are no practice problems or assignments associated with material covered.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
These notes are an excellent resource for students in a differential equations class. They can replace the exposition of the textbook and will help the students focus on the most important concepts of each section. A student can use these notes along with instructor assigned homework and will not need to purchase a textbook for the class.
Concerns:
In case that this set of notes does replace a textbook, the instructor should complement the course with additional sources of visual and application nature.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The site is basically linear text. Google local search is on every page to facilitate location of topics. Each example has a hyperlink to the solution so that the student can go directly to the solution without having to scroll down. There are also hyperlinks to formulas and equations that are referred to in the explanations. Clicking on an equation enlarges it making it easier to read. The navigation structure of the site is very user friendly.
Concerns:
The derivative and exponent notation is often difficult to read unless it is clicked on to enlarge.
