eduCanon is an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components - increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning. It harnesses the power to differentiate the curriculum. Teachers are able to customize online content to their students' needs. The medium used for delivery engages the students.
Type of Material:
Development tool
Recommended Uses:
Classroom curriculum in any discipline. eduCanon requires that an instructor begin with a video. The video can be in the public domain or it can be the instructor's own video.
Technical Requirements:
Internet connection; works with iPad and a mobile phone, but screen size on phone may be prohibitive for doing design work.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
1. eduCanon does not prescribe any specific learning goals, but allows the instructor to create materials with eduCanon (or assignments around eduCanon) that meet the intended learning outcomes for their classroom.
2. Provides an opportunity for educators to insert questions or comments within videos.
3. Allows instructors to create media content to support flipped lessons within their classrooms.
Target Student Population:
K-College, although certain sections highlight tools that are more geared toward K-12.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Having a video pertinent to your topic.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The tool does not provide content, but this technology allows a teacher to develop personalized lessons for students. Modeling of skills can be delivered along with any type of information needing to be shared. This technology combines text, pictures, video, etc. in a way that is easy for the teacher to develop and engaging for students learning.
Concerns:
The tool seems to be geared to the K-12 classroom, although there is the provision to choose "other" when defining the classroom. Educators are given a unique ID which they can share with students. "Bulbs" (the completed video with questions and comments) have unique URLs and can be designated as private.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The objective of this technology is to give teachers a resource for making course content engaging for students. The developed "bulbs" can be used at any stage of the learning process. Target learners can be regular or special education. This technology can be easily "slipped" into the curriculum. Educators can use this tool to make their already existing videos more interactive and engaging.
Teachers can record audio over the video to explain content or highlight vocabulary.
Younger learners are used to videos with pop-ups, and this is quite similar.
Concerns:
To get feedback on individual users' responses to questions, educators must upload their roster.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
This is a very easy to use program. If a teacher knows how to cut and paste, search for materials, and basic computer skills, they will be able to use this technology with minimal time needed for training. The information developed within the "bulbs" created should be attractive to students so that they are engaged in the material.
First time users can access a hands-on tutorial that is built into the interface in a clean and effortless way.
Concerns:
Searching for answers about how to use eduCanon seems difficult. The FAQ is located at the very bottom of the home page. It can be difficult to find if you don't know where to look.
