Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
These talks can be used in the early stages of a college program in Special Education or advanced studies at the graduate level. The learner could be a student, teacher, behavioral professional, or a parent. The videos do a nice job of making connections between concepts: Autism, education, learning styles, genetics and the brain. The videos provide a great mode of presentation and learning that many students prefer.
Concerns:
The resource itself doesn’t have learning objectives stated upfront. These videos would most likely be used as supplemental resources that the instructor would need to strategically integrate into a lesson/unit/etc. As a result, the effectiveness that the resource may have on learning could be dependent on how well the instructor uses/integrates it.
The videos range from 5 minutes to 20 minutes and there are seven videos. As a result, an instructor would want to be mindful as to which videos they use and careful not to use too many in a short time period. There is potential for there to be efficient learning, but if an instructor were to use all videos in one short period of time, this could lead to cognitive overload for the learners.
With the videos being more lecture based, it may not appeal to some individuals with certain preferred learning styles (e.g. Kinesthetic learners).
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
• Each video comes with an interactive transcript and controls.
• The videos have been professional recorded and therefore are of higher quality than other internet based videos you may find.
• The videos played in multiple Web Browsers (Specially Firefox, IE, and Chrome were tested).
Concerns:
• With there being seven videos there’s a variety of presentation styles. Some a little more engaging while others a little more “dry”. Some of the videos may maintain an audience’s attention a little better than others.
• Each video is more or less a person lecturing and them being recorded. This may not come across as engaging and visually appealing to some learners.
• The videos require Adobe Flash Player. As a result, a user would not be able to view the videos using a Web Browsers running on an iOS (e.g. iPad or iPhone).
