This site contains an interactive tool that allows the user to create various sequences by inputting a starting number, a multiplier, and an add-on. A graph of the resulting sequence and a list of the elements of the sequence are displayed in the applet.
Type of Material:
Drill and practice.
This site can be used for demonstrations or for individual student practice.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Reinforce and improve understanding of sequences and their behavior.
Target Student Population:
Students in a Pre-Calculus course or the second semester of a standard Calculus course.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basics knowledge of sequences.
This module allows the user to create various sequences by inputting a starting number, a multiplier, and an add-on. A given element of the sequence is obtained by multiplying the preceding number by the multiplier, and then adding the add-on. A graph of the resulting sequence and a list of the elements of the sequence are displayed in the applet.
A general definition of a sequence (or at least a link to one) would be an improvement. Also, a formula for the n-th term or a recursion could be displayed.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
The site can be used as a part of in-class demonstration or a self-guided activity. A list of suggested activities with this tool is given under Instructor tab. A set of links to related topics is a big plus.
The sequences that can be created are geometric and arithmetic sequences and combinations of the two, but nowhere does the site explain this or provide the background of geometric or arithmetic sequences. Without this guidance, a student can easily miss the point.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
A user can start working with this tool right away by changing input parameters and executing the applet. The input and creation of the sequences are intuitive, so there is no learning curve to use this activity. There is a link to instructions explaining how to print output if necessary.
In order to understand the activity one must read the Learner tab first.
