This server provides 28967 images of protists (487 genera, 1617 species) as research and educational resources. The INDEX sorts image and text information by Behavior, Phagocytosis, Cell division, Morphogenesis, Sexual reproduction, Cysts, Organelle, Endosymbiosis and DNA. Links are provided to other resources such as a book on THE BEHAVIOR OF LOWER ORGANISMS BY HERBERT S. JENNINGS Published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1904, and an ant image database.
Type of Material:
Collection
Recommended Uses:
Research reference and images on protists and other microorganism. This material can be used in the classroom or for information to researchers studying the microorganisms. It can be used by students for homework or research as well as by teachers to provide examples of different specimens.
Technical Requirements:
Must be able to download images from the Internet.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The goal of the site is to provide information and images images of protists and other microorganisms ( 768 genera, 3226 species, 15878 samples) and 2261 movie clips as research and educational resources. Updated Jan. 06, 2017
Target Student Population:
The material is designed for graduate students but can be used to illustrate biological concepts in advanced science classes.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Only knowledge of browsing the internet using a browser is required of the user.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The web site does provide important information for study in the discipline. It is updated frequently. When an image is selected there is information on behavior, tests, cell division, DNA. The images are high quality and the text is clear and easily readable.

None.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The materials/specimens offered in this website allow the student or teacher to view different specimens that may be hard to find in the classroom environment. The material can be used by a teacher to demonstrate what the specific item looks like without having to purchase the specimens for the classroom. Students can view specimens that they may not be able to physically view in their classroom.
Concerns:
None.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
