North Harris College Biology Department is the biology department website. There are three main domains; the Biology Learning Center which contains links and resources for additional study, Anatomy and Physiology which contains lab materials, and the Faculty and Staff websites. Content covered in the Anatomy and Physiology Lab I includes practical sheets, general anatomy by regions, chemistry, microscope, cellular exercises, histology, skeletal system, joints and muscles, nervous system, integumentary system, special senses, and references. Content covered for Anatomy and Physiology Lab II includes practical sheets, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, digestive, reproductive, and references. Several of the sections provide a quiz feature with feedback.
This web site provides resources for both students and faculty preparing lectures or discussions. This site offers web links, tutorials, Hole Online Learning, AP1 Lab Help, and animation links in the following subjects: Human Anatomy & Physiology I, Human Anatomy & Physiology II, Biology I, Biology II, Microbiology, and Nutrition.
Type of Material:
Collection.
Recommended Uses:
This site could be used as a lab section, or a supplement, to an anatomy and physiology course. The site could be used as review for students. The site also contains lab sheets and images that could be incorporated into a lecture, small group session, or lab session.
Faculty or students in human A&P courses and labs can use these materials before or after classes.
Technical Requirements:
Web browser
Identify Major Learning Goals:
After completion of the site materials, students will be able to:
identify anatomical structures in each anatomical system.
identify structures on histological images.
describe the function and structure of the anatomical systems.
This site provides reference material for Anatomy and Physiology I and II courses and their accompanying labs. Students and faculty will have resources to support their work in these courses.
Target Student Population:
High school and college students. Anatomy and Physiology I and II students and faculty.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Students should have basic familiarity with the anatomical terminology and basic biological concepts.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Provides useful and accurate content.
The content is complete in scope and provides a solid foundation.
Holds a wide range of practicals, images and other teaching tools.
The information and resources on this website is high-quality, in-depth and factually accurate.
The material is flexible in that it can be used by both faculty and students in a variety of contexts (e.g. ppt slides can be used to prepare for classes or to study for exams).
Concerns:
None
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Histological and anatomical images are clear and accurately labeled.
The quizzing features do provide feedback on incorrect answers.
Appeals to multiple learning styles by using images and text.
The site is engaging.
Individual pieces of this site can easily be integrated into existing courses or study regimens.
The goal of the Biology Dept and this site is clearly stated on the home page for the department.
Concerns:
There are no learning objectives
The feedback on quizzes could be more specific to explain why it is incorrect.
As a whole, this collection of resources is not designed to assess learning outcomes directly. It does not identify learning goals for each piece of material and needs significant contextualization to be used within a course.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The content is well organized.
The site is easy to navigate.
The site is intuitive to use and well-designed. It is visually appealing and easy to navigate.
Concerns:
A few links appear to be broken.
The "AP Labs" section appears somewhat dated; clickable links for the labs there lead to automatically downloading documents onto the user's computer. This may be alarming to some visitors. It may be better to label these more clearly to indicate what they are.
