Organizational Leadership and Change focuses on practical experience that blends theory and practice. Students reflect on prior leadership experiences and then apply lessons learned to further develop their leadership capabilities. The course requires active participation in all leadership classes and/or activities as well as short deliverables throughout the program. For another faculty to use this material in the classroom, the faculty will have to specifically direct a student to which parts and pieces to read/utilize. Even though this is a course, by itself, the content can be used in other courses
Type of Material:
Online Course
Recommended Uses:
This course can be used in its entirety, keeping in mind that the material available supported a traditional, face-to-face teaching environment. Aspects of the course can be used for homework, for teams, for lecture, for individuals and as in class activities.
Technical Requirements:
Adobe Reader 18.011.20036
Java 8, update 91
Mozilla Firefox 58.0.2, Chrome were both used for review
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Learn practical leadership skills
Apply organizational assessments
Reflect and build on personal leadership skills
Target Student Population:
Graduate students are the target population, as this information supplements an MBA and an MS in Engineering.
Aspects of the course may be used with discretion for upper level, undergraduate coursework and possibly for personnel developmental efforts in organizations.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
It is highly recommended that students have at least a bachelor’s degree and an understanding of leadership theory.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Excellent reading and interactive materials to ground a student in the conceptual information
Is flexible, can be used in several different ways for leadership and organizational assessments
Excellent integration of the concept through practical assignments
Many examples dealing with ethics, leadership and authority are included, including business cases such as IBM, and historical cases such as the British monarchy.
Several discussions in the course can provide very good information about ethics and leadership.
Concerns:
Will need context from a faculty member if used in another class
Has a good amount of material, but a faculty will need to do an in-depth review for use in his or her classroom
The internship piece may have no cross-compatibility in another course
There is a concern about the age of this material and about how much of the course is usable because the online content supports a traditional (in person) lecture series
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Concepts are reinforced through practical assignments that can be modified for another use
Good integration of conceptual to practical information
A student can learn much from the material and assignments
Thought-provoking discussion questions about areas such as ethics, leadership, authority, social control, innovation and leadership theory are used in examining cases in the course.
Concerns:
A faculty will have to be careful that the assignments or exercises fit into their curriculum
A faculty will have to make sure the material fits into their own learning objectives
May need extra time in evaluating the materials for use in another class
Prerequisite knowledge is not specifically identified; however, the purpose of the course includes information about the purpose and intent.
Specific learning objectives are not addressed, although they can be assumed.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Students will be engaged by different sources of information
A very interactive site, with varying sources and visuals to help learners
The materials are well done from a visual perspective - increasing student engagement
Lecture notes, assignments and readings can be easily adapted to other courses and provide a roadmap that links the concepts in the course together.
Concerns:
Since accessibility is relatively recent, ADA compliance does not appear to be addressed
Is easy to use, however, a faculty will need to give direction on what to use and specifically direct students
No clear instructions if a faculty is using this in another curriculum
Because this is intended to be a traditional seminar presentation and is not strictly designed for virtual learning, there is not a lot of visual appeal in posted documents.
The internship obviously would not apply.
Other Issues and Comments:
Lecture notes, readings, study questions and assignments can be highly effective materials when used in similar courses or with similar topics.
