A companion web site for the Frontline (PBS) program of the same name which aired on January 30, 2001. Includes facts and statistics, a review of the "adult vs. child" debate, and four case studies (with video clips). A transcript of the program also is available on the Frontline site.
Type of Material:
Presentation.
Recommended Uses:
This would be good supplementary material for homework for individuals, or team assignments, or anyone who would like to learn more on the subject. This would be useful in both sociology and criminal justice programs.
Technical Requirements:
Website tested in Chrome and Firefox. To view video clips requires Realplayer, g2.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Although there are no stated educational goals the material provides case studies, interviews, and an overview of the juvenile justice system, particularly in California. Complex case studies reveal how the criminal justice system operates in grey zones and that decisions are rarely clear cut. It is helpful in showing both structural and systemic influences on juvenile criminalization. It asks important questions and stimulates student thought.
Target Student Population:
College General Ed.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Some software may be required for accessing video links, etc.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The materials are well organized and engaging. The website provides both factual information as well as personal stories. In particular, the section with interviews of judges who try juvenile cases supplies a great deal of context for the material.
Concerns:
It would be better to have different takes on each case. The material is becoming dated. Many of the referenced policies are not as relevant as they once were.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The material is not immediately pedagogical, it is up to the instructor to build an activity around it. However it provides a great deal of flexibility.
Concerns:
This is part of an expose of the California juvenile justice system made by a television production company. It may or may not be applicable to other U.S. states, and has very limited use outside the United States.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The website is easy to navigate and well-organized.
Concerns:
It's beginning to show its age. Many of the photos and headers no longer load, giving the layout an odd, incomplete look.
