Overview:

Gingival health assessment is an essential part of the dental hygiene clinician role.  It is important to correctly classifying the state of gingival health by describing clinical features, size, location, and severity. Gingival observation is fundamental for diagnosing oral disease and can support identifying underlying systemic, environmental, or behavioral concerns that may warrant further evaluation. This webpage about dental care contains a gingival review with photos and quiz questions for dental hygiene students to become more practiced at assessing the color, consistency, and contour of the gingiva and notate gingival descriptions accurately.  The intended audience is those learning to be professionals or professionals who assess or provide dental care.

  • There are images, videos, and many professional and patient dental education resources. 
  • The website includes a comprehensive array of information.
  • It summarizes every oral health condition well.
  • It is clear and concise in presenting the topic.
  • It provides a complete demonstration of every oral health condition.
  • The resource is convenient for use.
Concerns:

  • The source is practice oriented.  By incorporating research that is the basis for practice, it would improve the resource.  
  • It did not include the relationship between those oral health conditions and systematic medical conditions.
  • It did not cite adequate medical research, textbook, and publications.
  • There is use of Oral B products throughout the website.  So, the user should be aware there is a commercial aspect.  However, the resources are outstanding.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

  • The website is quite comprehensive. 
  • It does increase the potential for student learning. 
  • The videos and images are excellent. 
  • The website does promote teaching and learning. 
  • There is a faculty resource area that provides teaching/learning items that faculty could use in courses.
  • It can be easily integrated into the curriculum after identifying the student learning outcomes.
Concerns:

  • The prerequisite knowledge has not been identified clearly.
  • It did not show the relationship between the concepts or oral medical conditions.

  • The website is clear and has a consistent layout.   
  • It is easy to navigate, but is a quite complex and comprehensive site. 
  • Due to the comprehensiveness, it is overwhelming at times, but the consistency in which it is designed helps. 
  • All links and items are in working order.
  • It has clear instructions to follow.
  • It is accessible.
Concerns:

None. 

Other Issues and Comments:

  • The site appears to be updated often.   
  • A concern is the use of one brand for dental care that is prevalent.   However, the resources are excellent. 
  • Opportunities for improvement are to incorporate more detailed learning objectives for each main oral medical condition.
  • Incorporate information on the relationship between oral health and systematic chronic health conditions.
  • Provide some examples of how the systematic chronic condition like Diabetes Mellitus has impacted the oral health.  
  • Incorporate sufficient self-check knowledge to check the learner's knowledge and provide immediate feedback.
  • Incorporate some diagrams, flow charts, and figures to show the link between the oral health conditions and how they are connected somehow.
  • Include the reference, publications, and research that have been used to cite such information in this presentation.
