Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Author provides audience with a very creative method of teaching Excel and Accounting concepts.
The eBook gives some good examples of how Excel functions, formulas and graphs can be used to present financial information in different or nonconventional ways. The ideas and tips provided are practical hands on advice for Excel users, providing good approaches to analysis and presentation of financial information.
Concerns:
While the specific examples in the eBook are fairly clear, the whole eBook was not that concise. There are a lot of pages of material and the learner has to skim through sections in order to find the content that is useful. It is difficult to follow in some of the examples because the data that was used is not available to the learner, or some of the references to external sites are broken.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Teachers and students could learn a lot in a short time about Excel and Accounting and at the same time develop practical critical thinking skills. Many of the examples provide useful knowledge related to formulas, graphs and functions that the beginner Excel user can use to produce accounting and financial information.
Concerns:
It is difficult to learn efficiently. Many of the examples depict the data and applicable graphs. It is time consuming to follow along and replicate the examples without the datasets. Also, in some instances, it is not entirely clear what the information produced can be used for, the author has left it up to the learner to figure out.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The author’s website and related educational resources are professionally done. Good instructions, good visuals and some ideas for presenting information in a nontraditional format.
Concerns:
Not that easy to follow along for practice. The datasets are not included for learners to try creating the graphs and using the functions.
