Nurses use the Leopold Maneuvers when caring for their pregnant patients. Nurses must remember to perform 4 specific actions as a part of these methods. The skill of the individual performing the maneuvers is critical to determine if the fetus is in the correct position so it is very important that nurses learn to execute the Leopold Maneuvers correctly. This content includes a written description of each maneuver plus a 15-minute video which illustrates how to perform each maneuver.
Type of Material:
Presentation and simulation
Recommended Uses:
Online and face to face lecture
Discussion board
Individual project
Lab activity
Show and tell demonstration during OBGY clinical practice
Self-paced, individual, homework.
Technical Requirements:
You Tube access
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify the four basic steps on how to perform Leopold Maneuver
2. Examine fetus position in a pregnant patient
3. Assess the position of the fetus through palpation
4. Assess a well-flexed fetus head which must be located on the opposite side of the fetal back.
5. Compare and contrast if there will be any complication during pregnancy depending on the position of the fetus while assessing the mother during pregnancy.
6. Leverage the assessment technique while palpating during an assessment and be able to detect the position of the fetus.
Target Student Population:
Bachelor’s degree nursing students, nurse practitioners, interns, physicians during OBGY training and emergency medical personnel and College Upper Division, and Graduate School, Professionals.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic anatomy and physiology and medical terminology is helpful.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The visual presentation is very engaging and thus provided the student to perform the Leopold Maneuvers as well as providing a different learning style for students to listen to the instructor as wells as practicing the assessment by using both a live patient and a doll to showcase the process through simulation. The presenter articulately explains the four basic steps on how to perform the Leopold Maneuvers when assessing a pregnant patient.
Concerns:
A literature review of how the Leopold Maneuvers has been used successfully in research would be helpful.
Specific learning outcomes would be helpful.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Students will gain an understanding of the Leopold Maneuvers when caring for pregnant patients. The student would gain knowledge of fundal grip, umbilical grip, Pawklicks grips, and Pelvic grip while caring for a pregnant patient.
The student will understand how to determine the fetus size, shape, and fetus mobility while using the Fundal grip.
The student would also gain cultural sensitivity when assessing a patient that is pregnant by informing the patient if it is ok to perform the assessment and letting the patient understand the process of the assessment.
Concerns:
The video is helpful but it does not completely align with the text. Should supplement the other.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Can be utilized in clinical practice for both nursing students, interns, and for continued education for OBGY practitioners.
The materials can be used to increase student physical participation in labs, clinical practices, and as a discussion forum to increase a community of practice in an online environment.
Concerns:
Video is auto-captioned with many errors, so not reliable. This decreases the accessibility of the material.
Other Issues and Comments:
No other issues were noted.
