Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This blog post describes a four-step problem solving strategy for related-rate problems. It includes two example videos in which problems are worked very slowly and clearly. The remainder of the post outlines the four steps and relates these steps to the previous examples. Links to prerequisite material, such as a chain rule example video, are included. Links to additional related rate example problems are also included.
Concerns:
Students should be reminded that related rate problems are application problems and, as such, are not routine. Much practice is required.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This is a good resource for students to quickly review related rate problems. It would also be helpful for students who are struggling to understand. Step-by-step examples are worked slowly and in conversational language. This would be a great resource to add to a reference library in the LMS for a Calculus I course.
Concerns:
Providing a set of learning outcomes would be beneficial for students in that it would help to illustrate how related rates are relevant and useful and not just a calculus procedure.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The layout is easy to understand and navigate. Students who take the time to read through the information will no doubt find it to be helpful
Concerns:
The layout is very well done, but it would help to relate the topic to real live problems to make Math alive! Most of our students struggle with Math and Statistics topics because they cannot connect them with real life problems.
Students might find it beneficial to outline the steps in solving a related rate problem prior to reviewing the first two example videos. This would help make students aware of what to look for.
