The text recommends and explains 12 data information literacy skills, which tie into the data management life cycle. The text itself draws from the ILMS-sponsored Data Information Literacy Project. The discipline-specific case studies, mainly in STEM areas, provide different approaches to data information literacy skills. The chapters are written by academic experrs and researchers, and information is accurate and current. Because of the case studies, the text can be used in several disciplines; it can also be used as part of academic research skills and technology information systems work. The chapters are related but largely self-sufficient. Links and content are appropriated cited.
Concerns:
The humanities is largely omitted in the content.

The learning objectives reflect ICT literacy standards and 2002 academic library information literacy standards. The book largely targets librarians, so assumes some professional knowledge. The case studies build on the data literacy standards, and reveal instructional efforts and results. The case studies serve as the main source of assignments, although the data literacy standards lend themselves to substantial discussion and study. In that respect, a variety of approaches have been used to ensure that the teaching and learning objectives are met at every stage. The overall concepts are efficiently developed, and are particularly applicable to research and academic life.
Concerns:
Especially as this book is a Creative Commons pubilcation, it should be updated to tie standards to the 2017 ACRL information literacy framework, especially as it has a deeper construct than the 2002 standards. Case studies are uneven in coverage.

The book is professionally written and well organized. It may be read without guidance, and requires little technology. It appears ADA-compliant.
Concerns:
Writing is sometimes dense (in tone and in layout). Few images grace the pages. The text is not interactive. No help feature exists (although as a pdf file, the application has a help feature).
