The contents of this study guide have been designed according to external licensure examinations requirements in the medical laboratory sciences field. The study guide questions have also been structured according to the Accrediting agency's requirements and standards to meet the professional best practice. This study guide will be organized into one main section: Body Fluids Laboratory Analysis. Type of Material:
Quiz/Test
Recommended Uses:
The quiz can be used in many settings - in-class quiz, as homework, lab setting, or for individual or group work.
Technical Requirements:
Acrobat PDF reader Google Chrome
Identify Major Learning Goals:
This quiz is structured for MLT (and other health science program students) to build knowledge about body fluids through a series of questions related to diseases/conditions.
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to:
1. State the most common disease-related to body fluids
2. Define the most common body fluids
3. Apply the acquired knowledge in solving the case studies related to body fluids
4. Apply the acquired skills in interpreting the laboratory findings related to body fluids
Target Student Population:
College Lower Division, Professional
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
A basic understanding of medical lab science, i.e., introductory to lab sciences course
The subject matter of the quiz is intented for medical lab technician students or other health science program students. The document is printable from the computer program with the answers on the final page (could be distributed in paper/pencil format without answers).
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The questions target many diseases/conditions requiring body fluid analysis.
Not all-inclusive but does cover pediatrics, adult, and geriatric stage of body fluid analysis.
Content presents a variety of lab scenario analysis, e.g., cystic fibrosis, pleural effusion, fecal, CSF, etc.
Content is well supported by references
Content layout is very simple and easy to follow: objectives, 20 multiple choice, and answer key
Concerns:
The quiz questions have some emphasis areas (i.e. four questions on CF) and are not inclusive of all diseases/conditions that MLT or other health science students may encounter in the arena of body fluids.
Identifying resources or context prior to categories of questions, which relate to lab analysis processes and results, would be of benefit so that there was a clearer reference point and basis for the quiz/test.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The quiz can be used in a multiple of ways in a course when studing body fluids. If can be an effective tool for body fluid content of the questions.
The categories of questions and types of lab specimens do promote conceptual learning.
Concerns:
The learning objectives do not align to the content; in order to do so, more guidelines or directives would be of benefit. For example, objective one and two identifies expectations of stating and defining; however, the questions are not formatted to measure those two objectives.
Suggestions on how to use the quiz/test would be of benefit; as presented it is 20 questions that includes an answer key.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The quiz was easy to access and use.
The site layout is easy to navigate and well organized.
The google doc software site is in working order.
Concerns:
A solid teaching tool; however, the tool is not visually appealing. If printed, the document would use a few more pages than needed.
No clear instructions are provided; one assumes to take the test and then review the answers.
Site is flat; it would benefit from interactive links including ability to score online.
Other Issues and Comments:
Strong tool on body fluids. Vary the diseases/conditions a bit more to be more inclusive of potential body fluids seen by MLT or other health science students. Recommend updating with typing errors/spelling corrected.
