Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Everyone should be able to relate to the choice: do you choose to try and risk failing? Or do you choose not to try because of a fear of failure?
This motivational speech particularly relates to imposter syndrome (where we may avoid challenge) and generally illustrates a wide variety of psychology concepts (e.g., self-confidence, self-efficacy, gender & career, risk-taking & career, work-life balance or living an integrated life). The content is compellingly presented in that Reitman shares her experience in very personal, candid terms (even tearing up at one point in the talk). This is relatable (and much of the commentary posted in response to the talk confirms this point).
Concerns:
Instructors will want to provide background readings or lectures that connect the content of the Tedx Talk with psychology concepts of interest.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The talk does a very good job of illustrating one professional woman's journey toward believing in her ideas and finding the will and the voice to advocate for them. While most will not suddenly change their behavior from watching one talk, reflection on this talk will likely have an impact on at least some of our choices.
Concerns:
Instructors who use the video in class will want to embed it within a broader context that includes specific learning goals for the psychology concepts covered in the course. So for example, an I/O psychology course might focus on career-related elements of the talk while a general psychology course might embed the talk in a discussion of self-esteem.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
As is the case with all TED talks, this is a high-quality, professionally produced video with closed captioning.
Concerns:
None.
