Website containing educational videos and a few simulations, in a broad range of engineering disciplines: control, mechatronics, mechanical, energy and others. The videos come from different sources and have different styles. There is not an outline connecting them. There are some pdf files too.
Type of Material:
Collection. Website. Videos.
Recommended Uses:
In class, lecture, individual.
The materials can be used for online teaching - the instructor can link his/her courseware to any item on the website. The items can be used to address specific topics of a course. the materials could used also in class, lecture, individual.
Technical Requirements:
The video collection can be viewed online using any of the typical browsers.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The student will be able to observe the practical application of theories presented. The student will be able to observe the investigation into theories taught. The website is analogous to a library. It contains items whose learning goals are to be set by the instructor. The items have no contextual information, for example, a theoretical explanaion of the concepts/methods they address. The videos present no contextual information. Thus, they must be integrated by the teacher into his/her courseware.
Target Student Population:
Grade School, Middle School, High School, College General Ed, College Lower Division, College Upper Division, Graduate School, Professional
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
The user must be familiar with the theory that is being demonstrated. Knowledge of fundamentals of physics.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The videos and simulations are clear and concise. They demonstrate the core concept grounded in the discipline, and are current and relevant supported by appropriate research. The website offers a wide range of items - they are not related. They can be combined according to the objectives the instructors set for their courses. Examination of the CSU Controls and Vibration Lab demonstrations indicated: (1) The topics that addressed are pertinent to a Controls Course; (2) The contents of the videos are very good - they use real equipment.
Concerns:
It is not self contained. It requires a background in the theory to understand the video demonstrations. Examination of the CSU Controls and Vibration Lab demonstrations indicated: (1) There is no theoretical context to support the experiments; (2) The instructor speaks very fast which may pose a problem to non native English speakers; (3) The items require an instructor to introduce concepts and show how they connect. The audio is in English and there are no captions. People who are hearing impaired will not be benefit from the materials, as well as those who do not know English.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The videos and simulations build on prior concepts. They demonstrate the relationship between concepts and are very efficient. With a little effort the videos and simulations can be used to reinforce concepts taught and be integrated into curriculum assignments. The variety of items is a doubtless quality of the website. It offers instructors a large set to choose from. The videos can’t be used as a stand-alone learning material, but as supplementary material in basic engineering courses. The videos and simulations build on prior concepts. The videos and simulations demonstrate the relationship between concepts.
Concerns:
The videos and simulations do not identify learning objectives and pre-requisite knowledge. They cannot be used to measure student learning outcomes. The videos and simulations cannot be used as is to reinforce concepts taught and be integrated into curriculum assignments.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The videos and simulations are of high design quality. They are engaging and meets accessibility requirements. The webpages are organized in topics/subtopics that list materials. It is very easy to use. Video duration is short enough to keep the attention of attendants. Video design is engaging.
Concerns:
Some of the videos and simulations open in a new TAB others do not affecting the movement between videos. A reliable internet is required to use this learning material. The videos are small with the ability to be made larger which is still not very big making them not very appealing visually. The videos and simulations are not interactive.
Other Issues and Comments:
Though there is a good portfolio of materials, the instructor must play a very important role for the materials to make sense.
