Overview:

This is a course portfolio compilation of the process and rationale used to select, roll out, and integrate an open textbook into a senior-level strategic management capstone business course at California State University Dominguez Hills. The choice of the textbook was to save money for the students (the cost is free) and to increase student engagement. Most students access the open textbook online.

Faculty would use this as a tool when walking through the decision-making process of choosing a new textbook, and considering how it could fit with existing course materials.
Resources, examples, and feedback from students and faculty are provided.

Technical Requirements:

The MERLOT material can be accessed using a PC, MAC, iPAD, Apple, or Android phone. It can be viewed using Internet Explorer, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari.

This is the capstone course so the business core would need to be completed. The capstone is usually completed in the last semester prior to graduation.

Strengths:

This is an e-portfolio presenting how an instructor approached choosing and integrating an open textbook into a senior-level strategic management course to augment course content.
The e-portfolio is extremely well organized and includes clear and concise information that is very detailed and relevant to the content covered.
Appropriate links are included so that reviewers can view supporting documentation.
The author explains very well how each aspect of the course is used in tandem with the textbook to strengthen the overall content of the course and as a result, student learning can be impacted.
A summary of the content is provided as well as anticipated learning outcomes.
Each of the chapter's content is relevant and easy to understand.
The images and graphics make the reading more entertaining and appealing.

The portfolio is visually appealing, clean, and easy to follow.
The portfolio is easily accessible.
The portfolio is downloadable and able to be accessed with and without the internet.
The content from the portfolio may be used on multiple mobile devices.
The eBook's content can be enlarged for those with visual disabilities.

Concerns:

The portfolio is not interactive, however, it would be possible to add web 2.0 features to explain aspects of the integration (for example using tools such as padlet or loom might add interest to the portfolio – possibly even flip (formerly flipgrid and include clips of student experiences).
