Overview:

Chippewa Valley Technical College is pleased to announce the release of the Nursing Assistant OER textbook with CC BY licensing. This book was developed for use in Nursing Assistant courses with funding from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). It contains remixed content from Open RN textbooks and other OER sources as well as new content. Chapters contain interactive learning activities and videos of instructor skills demonstrations.

Identify Major Learning Goals:

After using this OER textbook, the student will provide basic care and help patients with daily living activities. They typically perform the following tasks:

  • Clean and bathe patients
  • Help patients use the toilet and dress
  • Turn, reposition, and transfer patients between beds and wheelchairs
  • Listen to and record patients’ health concerns and report that information to nurses
  • Measure patients’ vital signs, such as temperature
  • Serve meals and help patients eat
  • Basic documentation and Reporting

  • At the end of each chapter are interactive learning exercises for students to check their understanding/knowledge and increase the learning potential.
  • Interactive learning exercises include videos, virtual simulations, case studies, knowledge check questions (for example, flip cards, fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choice, matching, etc.), and a glossary. 
  • The content concepts included are all relevant for nursing assistants.

  • The book navigational links/symbols have a consistent layout in working order.
  • The images, charts, and videos worked well.

  • The PDF format includes links for the reader to see external videos and interactive elements.
  • The PDF text format is selectable.
  • The OER book has a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). Items within the textbook hold various Creative Commons licenses as noted in the Preface section, under the Attribution heading.
  • The images in the OER book include text captions that are selectable.
