This open access textbook is intended to guide best practices in communication in the context of the nursing profession. The resource addresses communication theory, therapeutic communication and interviewing, and interprofessional communication as it relates to nursing. This resource is designed for students in undergraduate nursing programs. The project is supported and funded by the Ryerson University Faculty of Community Services Publication Grant.

This allows for flexibility, especially for working professionals or nursing students who may need to review or revisit certain areas of communication.

Major Learning Goals:

The primary goal of this material is to equip nursing professionals with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary for effective communication in various contexts, including therapeutic communication, interprofessional collaboration, and communication in crisis situations. The material aims to:

• Enhance Communication Skills in Nursing: Foster an understanding of essential communication principles, models, and approaches such as trauma-informed, relational inquiry, and anti-racist communication, which are crucial in building effective and compassionate interactions with patients and healthcare teams.

• Develop Therapeutic Interviewing Techniques: Provide nurses with the tools to conduct patient interviews that are empathetic, culturally sensitive, and developmentally appropriate, ensuring that patient concerns are understood and addressed effectively.

• Promote Effective Interprofessional Collaboration: Emphasize the importance of communication within interdisciplinary healthcare teams, enabling nurses to contribute to a collaborative and supportive environment that enhances patient outcomes.
