Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
OER Commons provides creation and hosting services for educational groups' OERs. Resources are searchable by subject, use, educational level, material type, standards language, and license. Groups can create collections, and hubs provide cross-institutional resource management Developed by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education, the materials cover many educational OERs. The site itself is self-contained, but the resources themselves are links. The website can be used in several ways, and links work and are attributed appropriately. Creative Commons Licenses allow for the remixing of materials for personalized use.
Concerns:
Because resources are added by many groups, materials vary in quality and depth. Some materials have not been thoroughly reviewed.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The materials can link to information literacy standards; the use and creation of OERs facilitates access. Materials may be grouped by subject matter, educational level, and other variables. Modules often build on one another and provide a full scope of digital/media literacy. Material type and educational levels are designated by instructors/designers, improving selection and overall use. With so many resources, it is easy to create assignments, especially those that are lessons themselves. The website and associated resources are useful in academic and daily life.
Concerns:
Because the resources are added by different groups with different objectives, materials vary in focus, quality, and connectness.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The website looks professional and engaging. It is easy to navigate independently as little technical skill is necessary. It also has a help feature, contact information, and hubs to facilitate community.
Concerns:
The website cannot guarantee full ADA-compliance as the resources themselves are links.
