This module introduces basic techniques in bibliometrics, such as citation analysis, citation impact factors, and bibliometric networks. Users consider the application of these kinds of methods for analysis of research quantity and quality. In addition to learning bibliographic methods, users consider the limits of this form of analysis. Specifically users confront and question the “publish or perish” model of academic knowledge production which places significant value on a single kind of scholarly output, and even more value on the percieved circulation of that output.

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The information, which was creazted by academics, is accurate and current. A video introduces bibliometrics, and supporting documents are provided. Implications are summarized. It is self-contained with a detailed introduction and exercises. Additional information resources are available. The website can be used across subject matter. Links work and are atributed.
Concerns:
Doesn't require background knowledge, but may be hard for some to follow who have no experience with citation bibliometrics. Users need to cownload a softrware program in order to do the activity; that program is not very intuitive, and users might not want to refer to the program's manual. In addition, the program is not fully developed. More details about biometrics could be presented expilcitly. Some citations are not linked.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The outcomes align with ICT literacy standards of evaluation and technology use. The website focuses on digital bibliometric tools. The learning activity is constructivist in nature and assignment-ready. While this is a brief tutorial, it does have enough content to get you started. Concepts progress and are demonstrated in the INFO ECO Cookbook video. The use of the site is applicable to academic settings.
Concerns:
More explanation is needed for users to fully understand bibliometrics. Users are unlikely to dig into the other citations, which are not annotated, Is is unclear how learners will be able to identify junior and senior researchers on their own. Users may need to watch multiple to fully understand the nuances of impact and how the Publish or Perish software works.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The introductory video is engaging and professional looking. Clear instructions are provided, and a getting-started video. Users can navigate the site independently.
Concerns:
The website and program do not appear to be ADA-compliant. The program "Publish or perish" is clunkly and still in development (which is not evident until one treis to use those features). Uploading citations is also time-consuming. There doesn't appear to be a help feature.
