Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The modular lessons are clear and concise, and provide the basic information needed for student comprehension. The materials were created by Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, so are accurate, authoritative and current. Each lesson is self-contained, but may also be used in conjunction with related lessons. The lessons themselves may be used in several academic domains as well as informal educational settings. Links work, and content is attributed and labelled appropriately.
Concerns:
The amount of material is not adequate; while there are numerous sources most of them require additional information to be of use in most situations. The concepts are not summarized well in most instances. Videos are not linked, and in some cases the instructor has to find relevant videos. It should be noted that the website is not completely developed, so that some of the subjects are shown in the splash screen, but have no lessons attached to them.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The learning objectves are clearly articularly, and reflect core ICT literacy standards -- particularly in terms of digital citizenship. The lesson introduces the concept, and provides a couple of activities to build knowledge. The modules are related, although they do not refer to each other explicitly. The ready-made lessons include the assignments themselves so time can be spent efficiently. The concepts are life skills.
Concerns:
Instructors have to find the videos themselves. Whiile modular design facilitates one-shot instruction, a stronger progression would have been useful.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the material is engaging and relevant to the user, linking concepts to daily life. The design quality of the website and lessons is professional, but the navigation is somewhat clunky. It appears that the material is ADA-compliant.
Concerns:
It is hard to find the search tool that enables one to filter lesson choice, and the results are not intuitively shown. The lessons are designed to be accessed a couple of ways (downloadable or shown online directly), but it ends up being more confusing than helpful. The materials are not engaging as they are all static and do not include suggested scripts or usage. There is no help feature. Not all materials are ADA-compliant, such as infographics.
Other Issues and Comments:
Materials are offered in both Spanish and English, although it is hard to tell if there is overlap as the materials are offered in separate sections rather than together so that both versions could be offered in bilingual settings.
