Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The content is current, comprehensive, and evidence-based. e.g., Clinical Judgment Measurement Model and Healthy People 2030.
Utilizes images, tables, and figures.
Utilizes smart hyperlinks for linking content, including in the book (in later chapters) and external content. The "link to learning" links help the reader see additional information without having to hunt for it in different places. The book also ties back to other chapters for additional information, which helps tie concepts together.
The chapter outlines and introductions ensure the reader knows what will be covered in that section with no discrepancies.
Alignment with the social determinants of health, along with the BSN Essentials, is helpful for mapping curriculum and demonstrating competencies.
The book includes a global view by including practices outside the United States, as well as practices such as labor support that may not be mainstream. This helps the reader to think from a more global perspective.
Concerns:
Consider using more graphics and visuals in some chapters, such as chapter 7 on sexually transmitted infections and urinary tract infections.
Graphics and images would also be beneficial in Chapter 8.2 to show actual pictures of breast reconstruction after surgery. This is a significant mental health issue for many women, so understanding what the outcome can look like is important.
In Chapter 9, Violence against women, actual pictures can help to drive home the seriousness of this issue.
Chapter 16 - more fetal heart rate monitor strips to indicate different types of rhythms along with the nursing interventions.
For visual-kinesthetic learners, the more pictures (real as opposed to computer-generated or graphics), the easier it is to relate the material.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This book provides overall learning outcomes and identifies a learning model in the introduction.
Includes learning objectives for each chapter.
Includes a summary at the end of each learning chapter and key terms.
Includes competency measurement and knowledge review at the end of each chapter.
Learning keys are provided for many chapters for learning/improvement.
The "Check Your Understanding" and reflection questions at the end of each chapter also add to the robustness of the e-book as an effective teaching tool.
The competency-based assessments provide a way for students and educators to demonstrate competencies that are accomplished or need further work, which is especially important for competency-based education programs and for any program accredited by CCNE.
The unfolding case study in chapter 11 on pregnancy is also nicely put together to help the reader understand the process of pregnancy.
The unfolding case study at the end of the book brings together the nursing process and clinical judgment in a way that helps the reader see all of the moving parts come together to learn how to provide the best care.
