This is a sub-page of the large and comprehensive Eric Weisstein's World of Mathematics site which is separately reviewed elsewhere on MERLOT. At the time of review this probability and statistics area listed 19 subtopics including Bayesian analysis, descriptive statistics, probability, random numbers, random walks, and statistical tests. Approximately 350 separate items on probability and statistics were included.

Type of Material:
Reference material collection.
Recommended Uses:
It is well-suited to serve as reference material for students of probability and statistics.
Technical Requirements:
Basic browser.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
To provide familiarity with definitions, formulas and applications of probability and statistics.
Target Student Population:
Math students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are interested in the subjects of probability and/or statistics.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Some knowledge of basic probability and statistics would be helpful; much of the material is at the advanced level and suitable for upper-division math majors.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This is a large collection of material on probability and statistics. Examples vary widely in their depth of coverage. Typical examples include: Bayesian analysis?basic definition with links to other definitions but no examples. Runs?a collection of interesting formulas for runs?many at the upper-division level?with links to related material such as coin tossing. Statistical tests feature 45 different items.
Concerns:
Many of the items such as z-score or hypothesis test are simply an encyclopedia-style definition but miss the opportunity to show or link to appropriate examples and applications. Even more complicated items such as ANOVA or the Chi-squared test tend to be just a collection of formulas.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This page will be effective for the student wishing easy access to definitions and formulas for probability and statistics. The content will be most useful for those with advanced math knowledge.
Concerns:
The opportunity to include examples and applications has been missed in many items.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
All of the items feature links to related ideas and references. These include other pages on this site, other internet resources, and online book sellers. There is also a link to related Wolfram products.
Concerns:
None.
