This learning object is a series of pictures of normal liver and diseased liver tissue which are animated to be presented in a continuous loop
Type of Material:
Flash animation of medical illustrations
Recommended Uses:
This was designed to show the skills of the author, a medical illustrator but not specifically designed as a learning object or teaching tool. Indeed there is a site copyright prohibiting downloading and images use without permission.
Technical Requirements:
Modern browsers have Flash plug-ins and nothing else is required.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
This was designed to show the skills of the author, a medical illustrator but not specifically designed as a learning object or teaching tool. Indeed there is a site copyright prohibiting downloading and images use without permission.
Target Student Population:
That would depend on the adopter, perhaps an undergraduate lecture.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
No skills are required to view the site. There is no context to the pictures so that must be provided from other sources.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Features of disease state are shown clearly
Concerns:
A lack of context. I foresee classroom use only by instructors with specific goals. (limited reusability) Normal liver tissue is not shown in cross section to contrast the various cysts.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Well executed drawings, dramatic presentation, clear labeling of conditions
Concerns:
1. Images are without context so does not stand alone. I can only see classroom use with the instructor providing the commentary. It needs benchmarks to show features that distinguish the disease state. That may tie into the mechanism of the state. Could expand animation in several ways, such as showing pathology along with physical symptoms and lab reports.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
It?s total simplicity. Illustration are clear and crisp, would project well.
Concerns:
A textbook would work just as well ? even better with the added instructional text.
In its current state it is quite limited as a learning object t.
Other Issues and Comments:
Credentials of illustrator appear solid so I assume the pictures are true representations of diseased liver tissue.
