LingoFox Konjugator is a conjugation engine for German verbs. It will produce all verb forms from an infinitive or other forms (preterite etc.), however, it does not recognize compounded forms like "hatte gemacht." The user has to type in the participle only.
Type of Material:
All German verbs in all their forms.
Recommended Uses:
As a quick reference, or for review purposes for both teachers and students, as outlined above.
Technical Requirements:
No special requirements.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
There is no particular learning goal beyond verb practice and review. The engine helps students quickly retrieve unfamiliar forms or serves for review purposes. Conjugation charts can be printed out for future reference. There is also a (teacher's) section that is meant to create online tests or worksheets ("Konjugations-Arbeitsblatter"). The customized function, which would allow a teacher to put in the words s/he would like students to review, only grants limited access to non-LingoFox customers, and one has to study the fine print closely in order to get it to work properly. The randomization function does work reliably, but it is of little use for students with a very limited vocabulary.
Target Student Population:
Any student of the German language.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
All directions are given in German, so either a teacher needs to guide beginning students through the interface, or students need to be advanced enough to make use of these functions.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The database includes a plethora of verbs. Even seemingly rare words like "gammeln" und "purieren" can be found.
Concerns:
Certain old forms are not presented on the charts, for example, "werden" does not include "ward", and formal Sie-imperatives are not part of the respective section. Common verbs with prefixes (such as "spazierengehen" or "autofahren") cannot be conjugated, so users need to be aware of this limitation and that they should look for the base verb (gehen, fahren, etc.). A brief instruction to that effect could easily be added to the interface.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This is not so much a teaching rather than a useful tool for reference; as such it accomplishes its goal.
Concerns:
As this service is free, the provider limits daily access and and cuts the user off after about ten to fifteen different search requests. This is mentioned for the Online-Test section. Pay-for services are available and the site is quasi-commercial.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Layout and input are extremly straightforward and simple for the Konjugator, but the German directions for the online testing function need to be studied carefully.
Concerns:
The brief instructions are in German only. It would be helpful to add instructions at least in the major (Western) languages (English, French, Spanish).
