This site consists of a large collection of links to mathematics resources available at other sites on the world wide web. The database can be accessed using mathematical topics or keywords. Icons indicating level and type of material are provided.
Type of Material:
This is a reference collection of links to other resources.
Recommended Uses:
This primary use is as a resource collection of briefly annotated resources.
Technical Requirements:
This database collection of links simply requires the use of a browser; the site works well with older browsers and MACs. However, individual sites contained on the list have a variety of technical requirements depending on their nature and content.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The goal of the Mathematics Archives is to provide organized Internet access to a wide variety of mathematical resources with a primary emphasis on materials that can be used in teaching.
Target Student Population:
Material on the sites referenced ranges from kindergarten through undergraduate to graduate and professional level. Links have an icon that indicates the appropriate level.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
None to use the collection of links. Target web site levels vary with the link and individual resource selected.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This site contains an enormous collection of links to a wide variety of web sites that feature mathematics. There are approximately 40 mathematical topics ranging from traditional arithmetic or calculus to broader application areas. Each topic lists many resource links. For example, Art and Music lists 35 links to sites such as Art By Math ? a bandwidth intensive collection of slideshow presentations galleries, Godel, Escher nd Bach ? a descriptive site for a liberal arts type math course, and Sound of Mathematics ? a collection of midi files of algorithmic music. The topic Fractals lists 40 links to sites such as Java Julia set generator and Chaos in the Classroom. The topic of Calculus has an astonishing 130 plus links.
Concerns:
Since the site does not appear to being currently maintained some of the linked resources no longer exist and it presumably does not feature more recently available sites.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This site is an excellent resource for those wishing a single collection of links to a wide variety of web sites that feature math at many levels. It is probably most effective as a resource for teachers collecting interesting classroom enrichment material or for students investigating mathematical topics and looking for pointers to possible resources.
Concerns:
The ultimate quality of mathematical content obviously varies from link to link.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Site navigation is simple and excellent. The links are organized into about forty mathematical topics. Additional information is provided in the form of an icon that indicates the appropriate level for each link, ranging from K-6 to graduate/professional. There is also an icon that indicates the type of resource such as java,
interactive or image. It is also possible to search using keywords. The front page also includes the ability to send feedback and links to collections on teaching materials (9 subtopics) and math professional sites such as department listings and professional societies (16 subtopics).
Concerns:
The site does not appear to have been maintained since 2002 resulting in some broken links or redirections such as World of Escher and Fractal Lab. The What?s New section is not current. However, this is still a valuable collection of resources in one convenient location and format.
Other Issues and Comments:
Useful as a historical archive even if not updated. The site had an advisory panel of mathematicians during its creation and has won several awards.
