Overview:: The site provides a basic overview of techniques applicable to improving problem
solving. This module is a collection of articles designed to assist in the
problem solving process. It describes various general approaches to problem
solving (appreciation, drill-down, cause and effect diagrams, systems diagrams)
and some specific tools for specific situations (SWOT, cash flow forecasting,
risk analysis, Porters 5 forces, PEST analysis). Each approach is described
and
illustrated with an accompanying example.

Recommended Uses:: This could be used as a homework assignment a case could be given where these
techniques could be applied. Or, it could be used as an introduction to problem
solving skills.

Identify Major Learning Goals:: The major learning goal of this site is to provide basic understanding and
application of Problem Solving techniques applicable in business contexts. The
site accomplishes this by providing techniques that will assist in solving
complicated, difficult problems. The module provides techniques that are
starting points for solving problems that may otherwise appear huge, complex,
and/or overwhelming.
Target Student Population:: Anyone could benefit from this information but it could be used by graduate or
undergraduate management students. Also, the site might be used in
organizational training programs.

Rating:
Strengths:: This is an interesting and well written module. Each of the problem solving
techniques to explained well and is effectively illustrated through the use of
an example. The module discusses and explains the circumstances where which
each of these different techniques could be used.
Concerns:: The main concern is the lack of reference to academic sources (outside of
Porter). However, this is common on commercial sites. The site should make an
effort to strengthen its content by consulting and assimilating academic
research on the subject.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Strengths:: This module could be an effective teaching tool. By providing student with a
case and asking them to utilize these techniques to address the problems faced
by the organization, the students could apply the information that they have
learned.It could also supplement a textbook on problem solving techniques.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Strengths:: The module is well written and presented, and relatively easy to navigate.
Concerns:: Commercial advertising can be distracting. There is a charge for print
materials.

Other Issues and Comments:: Handy tool kit for problem solving techniques. Good supplementary site to allow
students to explore practical applications.
