The programme Interactive Respiratory Physiology is a compendium composed of tutorial, laboratory, quiz and glossary which provides the user multiple reinforced learning tracks.
Type of Material:
Tutorial, laboratory, quiz and glossary driven from a main menu page.
Technical Requirements:
Browser (It is noted on the site that Java does not work on Netscape (Mac))
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The achievable goal is working understanding of respiratory physiology. The level is consistent with that required to integrate this information with other related basic science and clinical disciplines for the purposes of problem solving.
Target Student Population:
Although it would certainly be useful in a Medical Science Physiology course or Nursing Anatomy and Physiology course, the primary audience appears to be undergraduate medical students.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
The way the programme is constructed no prerequisite knowledge is required.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Content is very high quality. The Gas Exchange ? Lung Model is excellent
Concerns:
Should time permit ,some animations of respiratory movement etc. may help to reduce the size of the text elements. In addition, more interactive modules along the lines of The Gas Exchange ? Lung Model would improve the presentation.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The material is presented in a variety of formats (tutorial, quiz, etc.) which makes it great example of a well rounded programme. A broad spectrum of student learning styles are provided.
Concerns:
The addition of a suggested reading list and possibly links to other sites related to Respiration although not necessary, would complete the site.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Even with the multiple levels it is very easy to navigate. The interactivity level is excellent due primarily, to the high quality of the design.
Concerns:
Perhaps a minor rework of labs requiring Java so that they run on both Browsers on both Mac and Wintel platforms.
