The Kennedy Center "E-Patron" program is a new high-tech initiative that allows you to increase your involvement in the Kennedy Center community--both in the Washington D.C. Metro area and online--for FREE! The audience can view special selections of Millennium Stage and other streaming audio and video events.
Type of Material:
A collection of live performances that are videotaped as they are being performed and archived online so the audience can view them at any time.
Technical Requirements:
RealPlayer is needed to hear the audio and view the videos. RealPlayer 8 Basic (free download) is recommended by these reviewers and is available at: www.real.com./player/indes.html?src+010524realhome 1 Depending on your connection and modem speed, you may experience net congestion. NOTE: One reviewer experienced a technical problem, so an e-mail was sent to the Kennedy Center Webmaster. A response was received within 21 minutes and the technical glitch was corrected in that short time. Also the e-mail from the webmaster was very courteous.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Students will appreciate the historical and cultural context and artistic perception of live or archived video performances from the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Performing Arts for Everyone is designed to introduce the Kennedy Center and its programs to a far wider audience than ever before by providing a performance open to the public and free of charge 365 days a year.
Target Student Population:
Students in K-16, and teachers interested and involved with arts education and performing arts. This site is for EVERYONE.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic internet browsing is the minimal requirement. If students have an understanding of basic performing arts concepts, such as beat, rhythm, voice control,
or what it takes to actually do a dance, then the viewing of the streaming videos will be enhanced. Other than reading titles, no reading is necessary since this site ia all about performing!
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The range of performances, from high school students to international musicians, make this site useful to those learning about the arts and those performing the arts. There are many, many choices. People who have no opportunity to attend events at the Kennedy Center are now given this opportunity. The site has a link where students can get involved with the viewing of the performances, by submitting feedback. And the responses are not only from students here in the United States. Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
An example of having access to a wonderful play is the link at http://trx.kennedy-center.org/epatron/membersonly/ Shenandoah Shakespeare Express presents A Midsummer Night's Dream (May 06, 2001). It appears that the user must be a "member," but there is a registration form (free) at http://trx.kennedy-center.org/eparton_new epartron form.cfm. The reviewers noted that the video is quite good. there is in the context of the current state of video capabilities: The speeds of the connections the students may use for the remaining lessons may not be fast enough to view a good video. The searchable database, the range of archived performances in all of the performing arts, the posted information, and the links for further information and follow-up, including one for student feedback, make this a very versatile and useful site.
Concerns:
If you are going to visit this site, download and install RealPlayer 8 Basic for the best experience. Be aware that the best viewing will be in the opening size of RealPlayer. As the technology improves, so too will the ability to view full screen videos.
