Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The information provided on the site is informative and accurate. It describes why job descriptions are important, what information they should contain, provides a template and numerous examples of job descriptions for different types of jobs and provides some guidance on how to begin the process of developing or revising job descriptions in an organization. It also discusses some interesting information about writing job descriptions for executives and corporate directors to incorporate ¿corporate responsibility¿ as one of the major requirements of those jobs. Also, it is geared toward audiences for the UK and some basic general, acceptable formatting differences between the UK and the U.S. may exist.
Concerns:
This site comes from the UK so some references are not well generalized to the American market. It must be stressed that the template provided is just an example and not necessarily one that will apply to all organizations.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The site does an excellent job of laying out the process of developing job descriptions from start to finish while clearly outlining the importance of job descriptions in ensuring the success of the organization. The template provides an excellent starting point for those new to the process of developing job descriptions and the extensive number of examples are drawn from disparate jobs and levels in the organization (Clerks, Managers, Administrative staff, Functional Directors, Store Managers etc.) to provide excellent reference material to those unfamiliar with the characteristics of job descriptions. Other links include appraisals, cv templates, references, resignation letters and exit interviews.
Concerns:
While there is excellent information provided here about how to write a job description, there is still information that must be provided by the instructor. There is no information about job analysis and the different processes that should be used to collect the information needed to write the job description, nor is there any discussion about how the process should be managed.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The tutorial is very simple to use, the user can just "scroll" down to access the material. There are only two links available in the main text of the documents. Overall, the tutorial is not necessarily recommended for human resource students for research, perhaps as a starting point for research.
Concerns:
The site is text-heavy and lacking graphics.
