Strengths:
The podcasts are easy to listen to with an engaging musical introduction and thoughtful commentary throughout by UT Professor Orlando Kelm. Example dialogs are performed by native speakers of Portuguese from different regions of Brazil and a native Spanish speaker. There are additional visual supports in .pdf files on the site as well as a blog where students may discuss what they learn and pose questions. The site is impeccably designed. The pronunciation exercises are complemented by cultural interludes which breaks up the intensity of a continuous lesson on phonetics.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Professors of Portuguese know that pronunciation is a major hurdle for all students. This site makes it easy for Spanish speakers to contrast the sounds of the two languages. The podcast format allows students to take their lessons with them wherever they go and practice anytime and anyplace. It is also an engaging informal way to learn; less rigid in structure than a traditional language learning cassette tape. The author uses humor and personal experiences when discussing culture. This is far more effective than simply reading about sounds on a page of a textbook.
