This collection of short discourses covers Ethernet wiring including: 10BaseT/UTP,100BaseTX/ 100 BaseT4,1000BaseT (twisted pair Ethernet, fast Ethernet and gigabit Ethernet). Other subjects are presented including the network hardware of hubs, routers and switches, USB adapters and a discussion of network speed, access, and large networks (extending cable). Types of networking are also explained; USB, DSL (ADSL/TDSL) and wireless LANs.
Type of Material:
This is a collection of reference material.
Recommended Uses:

Technical Requirements:
Computer with browser and connection to the Internet.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
After reading through this material, the student should be able to identify and describe the variety of wiring used in Ethernet networks, be able to describe the hardware needed to extend the wiring and identify wiring limitations. The student will be able to discuss speed, and the characteristics of Ethernet, a high level manner. The student will also be able to explain the difference between USB, DSL and Wireless networking at a high level.
Target Student Population:
This material is suitable for high school and continuing education students, at an introductory level.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The material on this site can function well as just-in-time information. It is not necessary to sequential read through each topic. The topics are clearly explained and rich in figures, pictures and basic animation. Tips and
suggestions are given during the discourse. Terms with links go to an
explanation, a picture or an index of terms with links to more modules on the
topic.
Concerns:
There is the occasional spelling error and grammar error. Advertisements blocked the login space. The page was very cluttered and it was difficult to find the article.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
There are links to other module topics related to networking and more current. There is a list of links into the topics for ease of access. Each topic is short and concise. The figures, animations and pictures are for the most part good quality and effectively support the information.
Concerns:
This material was written between 1997 and 2003, therefore some of the software references and screen shots are frozen in time. The topics are explained for the novice and may be too low level for a college networking class. There are no quizzes or hands-on suggestions for students.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The navigation is clear and access to the modules is simple.
Concerns:
Two topics listed in the start of the collection are actually graphical support for the subsequent material and not stand-alone topics. There is no back button on the topic pages.
