Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The content has a clear purpose (testing) and an average depth. It is self-contained. The information is accurate and may be re-purposed. The grammatical modules are reasonably challenging and with an interesting variety. The idiomatic/proverbs/slang part is original and point out some interesting specificity. The questions are well-chosen to test for concepts that students frequently find difficult. The culture and slang tests bring in information that students usually do not get except through visits to the country or through extensive film viewing and reading.
Concerns:
The cultural material is not always current; most of the references in music and cinema are 20 years old. These quizzes are more fact oriented than skill oriented.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The module does identify learning objectives by themes. It can be useful as a teacher resource or for independent study. It gives immediate feedback by giving the accurate answer. These tests develop factual knowledge on a range of different subjects.
Students could be motivated to take and retake the quizzes after spending some time in the classroom or in-country.
Concerns:
The site doesn't explain in detail why the answer is what it is. It just gives the right answer.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
It is very easy to use and has clear instructions. It can be engaging and covers many different subjects. The tests are short and engaging. They are built with a multiple-choice format. The design is plain and the navigation scheme (per theme) is obvious. Nothing fancy, no external links.
Concerns:
This is clearly a commercial site the purpose of which is to enroll new students. Therefore teachers should not be put off if all the links lead to the description of the services provided by the school and the premises.
