This module contains some videos describing a particular case study of service learning conducted in a marketing class at Savannah State University. It also describes the Savannah Enterpreneurial Center. It could be used as an introduction to service learning and its benefits to students.
Type of Material:

Provide ideas for how service learning projects could be completed without students' leaving campus; the idea could be very useful if students do not have transportation to go to the service organization; in-class display of videos followed by a discussion about service learning
Technical Requirements:
Flash 9 or later, Quicktime 7 or later
Identify Major Learning Goals:
See and hear an example of service learning, and the benefits of service learning projects to students. To use 21st century tools to alleviate constraints of transportation; To simulate the world organizations face when needing to work online in order to complete projects when team members are located throughout the world.
Target Student Population:
Undergraduate students in any field
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
None.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The module contains a real-life example of student learning and demonstrates the benefits to students. The video and textual explanation are clear, but provide few details.
Concerns:
A 54 second video and the couple of paragraphs of explanation provide very little information to assess the content quality in great detail; would like to see more information about the project, the process, the outcome, and assessments. The module is incomplete. Two links did not work and the main video is a brief overview that will eventually be replaced with a more complete video.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The general idea of using online resources to connect students with an organization for a service learning project has high potential as an experiential learning assignment. As a case study, the teaching effectiveness ratings are somewhat irrelevant. The module demonstrates a particular example of service learning. Its purpose is not the same as a MERLOT teaching tool.
Concerns:
NO data are provided to assess effectiveness.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The site design is attractive and easy to use. The quality of the video is sporadic. Some links are broken. The video and text are straightforward easily accessible.
Concerns:
The broken links should be fixed and more complete & polished videos be posted.
Other Issues and Comments:
There seems to be a terrific idea presented here, but more information is needed to make this more useful to others.
