High school students present a cute rap video that reviews various safety precautions needed in a chemistry lab.
Type of Material:
Short video presentation with rap music
All first year chemistry lab students should look at this on the web.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Review safety procedures in an entertaining way. Use music to instill the most important lab safety practices.
Target Student Population:
1st year chemistry students at middle school, high school or college level will benefit from this video.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Makes a boring topic more interesting. Students are more likely to pay attention to something that is presented by other students.
One of the students was wearing flip-flops (although the video did point out that closed-toed shoes are recommended) and none of the students were wearing lab jackets - lots of exposed skin! Does not address what to do with fire accidents or spills on clothing. DOes not address the issue of keeping arms and legs covered.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Many important points were made - proper attire, no food/gum, eye wash use, wafting of odors, spill cleanup and hazardous waste handling.
The rap music will iritate some viewers.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
YouTube video is close-captioned.
Some school campuses block YouTube.
