This site contains an interactive tutorial on sequences. It includes recursive sequences and explicitly defined sequence. It covers convergence and divergence and several types and examples of sequences.
Type of Material:
Tutorial.
Recommended Uses:
This site can be used for individual exploration and learning.
Technical Requirements:
JavaScript enabled browser.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
To learn the definitions and examples of sequences and series.
Target Student Population:
Students in a Calculus 2 or Pre-Calculus class (if only the first part of the module is used).
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
A general understanding of functions.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This site provides a clear and interactive lesson on sequences. It includes both text based explanations and quizzes for students to check their understanding of the topic. It has a nice exploration of the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio that includes an interactive scrapbook. When students hover over the highlighted key terms a more detailed explanation pops up. The second part of the module discusses the definition of series and focuses on arithmetic and geometric series.
Concerns:
Several of the content boxes rendered blank when used with both Firefox and Chrome.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This tool could serve as a supplement for a student who is reviewing sequences for a calculus class or as a more rigorous pre-calculus supplement on sequences.
Concerns:
It was difficult to assess the audience that this was geared towards. It introduces sequences from the beginning as though it is for Pre-Calculus students, but it includes without explanation an example of the golden spiral in polar coordinates without explaining what polar coordinates are.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The site is well designed and includes an interactive table of contents. The quizzes were intuitive to use and the content flows naturally.
Concerns:
Because of the trouble with rendering several of the content areas, it is difficult to read through many parts of the site.
