Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
There is a logical organization of materials by content topics. Assessment options include: matching, multiple-choice, fill-in, and drag n drop. Teachers can create own assessments for students or utilize ones already created and available in the site’s library. Items are available for free that offer teachers and students access 24/7. Tasks can be set up for working at individual pace.
When students complete the short exercises, they are given the number correct as well as correct answers. The quizzes are timed, so the user can attempt to increase speed.
Concerns:
None.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
It is easy to begin using any of the items. Materials are set up by category which enables the instructor to select specific skill sets that need addressing. The materials also include options for level of use, number of questions to work on at one time, use of timers, and feedback to user. Teacher can create an account and set up student access.
The labels, text, and menu buttons are easy to read and students can quickly find the section they are looking for. The graphics are impressive; in measurement, the ruler can be in centimeters or inches or both. The site translates materials into many languages such as Turkish, Chinese and Arabic.
Concerns:
It would be helpful if the site came with a tutorial on use for each of these different options but teacher could easily create an informational handout of how to choose options and use each of the different types of assessment.
Other Issues and Comments:
Good tool for review and added practice on many content topics.
There is a disclaimer in the vocabulary section that indicates the “content is from wiktionary.org and has not been verified for accuracy or appropriateness” and thus user is using at own risk.
When accessing the library the answer key is also offered which is beneficial to the teacher but students could also easily access the library and thus have answers in advance so educators need to consider how the assessments might be used.
