This is a short news story about the stress encountered by employees who remain behind when layoffs or downsizing occurs. The story was a collection of examples of workers who are experiencing long hours, less pay, and more work; causing additional workplace stress. This is a handy resource for discussion around HR issues
Type of Material:
A video recording and transcript of the PBS News Hour Report.
Recommended Uses:
Good source to present an opposing position to layoffs, unemployment vs. underemployment, etc. This as a good topic for a class debate or discussion as well as the background to a research paper on downsizing.
Technical Requirements:
Works with Chrome.
On a wireless connection there were some delays as video was buffered.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Raise student awareness that economic pressures put stress not only on the unemployed, but also on the employed who are asked to do more and more as globalisation creates competitive pressures from low wage economies around the world.
Target Student Population:
Lower levels in Higher Education: freshmen and sophomores.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic understanding of business and the concept of downsizing/layoffs and why they occur.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Independent, drawn from the public media. Covers both broad phenomena but also uses a case study to give the topic "human relevance".
Good variety of examples used; snippets were powerful and created an emotional response from the audience. Video/audio quality were good.
Concerns:
This excerpt is dated and therefore less relevant in the current state of our economy. Although the content presented is likely still accurate for the individuals, the gravity of this concern may or may not be lessened since 2010. The organization of the video was a bit distracting; the story jumped between many different scenarios and then back again so it became a little hard to follow each scenario.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Good cross-industry examples of worker burnout and why it occurs.
Can help students better appreciate the human impact of economic pressures.
Concerns:
The date of this material is a concern for its relevance and appropriateness in addressing this condition as a current research topic.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Good quality video and audio and easily accessible with no ads, etc.
Concerns:
Slow internet speeds will result in short lags in the video and audio.
