Serious threats to national security, combined with the seemingly endless capacity of digital processing and storage, have led to levels of data capture and 24/7 monitoring of individuals’ activity that were unimaginable even a decade ago. With resistance to such practices rising, this course will equip you to take an active part in the debate. You will gain a broad understanding of the competing tensions of the laws related to national security and personal and commercial privacy in the post-Snowden online environment, and grasp the looming consequences of this battle for peace, sovereignty, human rights and the internet itself. The course employs a variety of engaging learning methods, including videos, animations, knowledge checks and interactive discussion activities to guide you through key concepts and assist you in developing your own thoughts and opinions.

Sept. 6, 2016 – Oct 28, 2016 • Bioethics provides an overview of the legal, medical, and ethical questions around reproduction and human genetics and how to apply legal reasoning to these questions. This law course includes interviews with individuals who have used surrogacy and sperm donation, with medical professionals who are experts in current reproductive technologies like In Vitro Fertilization and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, and bioethicists and journalists who study the ownership and use of genetic information within human tissue. Additional Harvard colleagues will also share with you their thoughts on topics such as disability law as it relates to reproductive technology. While the law and ethics surrounding these technologies are a central component to this course, we also show you examples of the deeply personal and human side of these issues. Throughout the course, and with the help of law students, we will discuss leading legal cases in this field, which will illuminate the types of questions the law has struggled with stretching and evolving over time. From the famous Baby M surrogacy case, to cases on the paternity of sperm donors, to a case related to the ownership of human tissue turned into a commercial product, and others. We will show you the ethical, legal, and rhetorical underpinnings, which have served as the basis for various court decisions over the past 20 or 30 years. We will also explore potential future technologies and their implications for society: genetic enhancements to increase our intelligence, let us live a hundred years longer, or make us immune to diseases and the possibility of creating animal-human hybrids, for example a mouse with a humanized brain. The content within this course is intended to be instructive, and show how legal reasoning has been applied, or could be applied, to questions related to parenthood, reproduction, and other issues surrounding human genetic material. The material organized within this course should be considered an authoritative overview, but is not intended to serve as medical or legal advice. JuryX: Deliberations for Social Change, an experiment in online discours e, invites you to explore, through a series of asynchronous and synchronous group activities, a deliberative system by which emotionally charged issues can be discussed online with civility, empathy, and a desire to affect change. Although you will learn about the history of the jury and even serve as a member of a virtual jury for a mock criminal case, this experiment is about active citizenship, participation in the deliberative process, and a framework by which to facilitate dialogue within your own affinity group or community. The JuryX experience consists of six modules and an epilogue where we reflect on our core themes of governance and the internet. Each week, you will learn, apply, and share feedback on a new step in a system designed to foster civ ic dialogue. Starting with an introduction to the course's deliberative framework, you will move from a traditional jury-based application to a live social issue unfolding in real time: Question 4, the Massachusetts ballot measure to create a system for regulating and taxing cannabis for adult use, like alcohol. As citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts deliberate on this issue, so will you and your peers. What arguments will shape this debate, and what will the final outcome be? JuryX is all about participation. Two synchronous small-group deliberations will be held in our final few weeks using talkabout, a version of Google Hangouts. This free course, The law-making process in England and Wales, introduces you to the sources of law in England and Wales. It examines the democratic law-making process and how and by whom proposed legislation is initiated, before introducing you to the Westminster Parliament, which creates legislation. It is within this Parliament that proposed legislation is considered and becomes law.

The legal issues involved in setting up and running a business can be complex and confusing, especially when some of the terms used don't seem to have clear meanings. Company law in context is a free course from the College of Law, offering a basic introduction to the legal concepts of companies, partnerships, assets and liabilities.

The aim of this free course, Changing law: mental capacity legislation, is to consider how legal problems are identified and how the law develops to address those problems. It uses the evolution of legislation on decision making for mentally incapacitated adults to explore how development of the law is achieved. Through this study of the background to, and history of, the passage of legislation relating to mental capacity, legal meaning is discussed and explored.

This free course focuses on the use of exclusion clauses in contracts. Exclusion clauses are terms of a contract which seek to exclude or limit a party’s liability for loss or damage. The course looks at when and how such clauses are used, the approach taken by the courts and the role of legislation in this area.
