Recovery works; but most people didn't know it. We just didn't have the data. 12-Step groups have been aware of recovery for quite some time, but without the research, few beyond Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other 12-Step programs were aware of just how effective recovery can be. The concept of recovery has shown that a great deal of addiction is a chronic condition that has been treated as an acute illness. If treatment does not consider that addiction might be a chronic disease, it will be ineffective and set up false expectations for a large number of people. At the same time, with the advent of integrated treatment we were getting closer to utilizing what is important in order to reduce the negative consequences of substance use. Recovery is finally being recognized and system approaches (through Systems Thinking) is a natural next step. Now, system approaches can help us make recovery a reality for a great many people.
